Crime Prevention is Everyone's Job
Crime Prevention is Everyone's Job

Crime is an unfortunate reality that we all have to deal with. However, there are steps we can take to prevent crime and keep ourselves, our homes, and our vehicles safe. In this article, we will discuss some tips for personal safety, residential safety, and vehicle anti-theft, and we will encourage people to call the police when they observe suspicious activity.

Personal Safety

When it comes to personal safety, it is essential to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in areas that are known to be high crime. If you must walk alone, keep to well-lit areas and stick to main roads. It is also a good idea to carry a personal alarm or whistle, which can help deter attackers and attract attention if you are in danger.

Another important aspect of personal safety is to be cautious when using ATMs or other banking services. Choose ATMs that are located in well-lit areas and are highly visible to others. Be aware of who is around you and shield your PIN number when entering it.

Residential Safety

When it comes to residential safety, there are several steps you can take to prevent burglaries and break-ins. First, make sure all doors and windows are locked at all times, even when you are at home. Install deadbolts on all exterior doors and consider adding security bars or grates to windows.

It is also a good idea to install a security system or surveillance cameras, which can help deter burglars and provide evidence if a crime occurs. Finally, make sure to keep your yard well-lit and trimmed, which can make it less appealing to potential intruders.

Vehicle Anti-Theft

Vehicle theft is a common crime, but there are steps you can take to prevent it. First, always lock your car and never leave valuables in plain sight. Park in well-lit areas and consider using steering wheel locks or other anti-theft devices.

It is also a good idea to install a car alarm or GPS tracking system, which can help locate your vehicle if it is stolen. Finally, make sure to keep your car well-maintained, which can make it less appealing to thieves.

Call the Police

If you observe suspicious activity or a crime in progress, it is essential to call the police immediately. Don't assume that someone else will make the call – take the initiative and report what you see. The police rely on the community to help prevent crime, and your call could make all the difference in catching a criminal or preventing a crime from occurring.

Available Resources

The Baltimore County Police Department has several resources to help you stay safe. Contact your local Police Community Outreach Team to request a free Residential Security Survey, Citizens On Patrol Trainings or other crime prevention presentations.

Crime prevention is everyone's responsibility. By taking steps to ensure personal safety, residential safety, and vehicle anti-theft, we can all help prevent crime. And by calling the police when we observe suspicious activity, we can work together to keep our communities safe.
