Baltimore County Teams Up to Tackle Litter!

Story by Bryen Glass

Just in time for Earth Day, Litter Blitz is here!! Are you planning a cleanup to celebrate? Register it at https://baltcolitterblitz-bc-gis.hub.arcgis.com/. Baltimore County will provide free bags and gloves upon request, while supplies last. The Litter Blitz initiative is a partnership between the County Executive’s Office, and Baltimore County departments - Public Works, Transportation, Environmental Protection and Sustainability, and Recreation and Parks.

According to the Maryland Department of the Environment, "litter is the improper disposal of unwanted material. Litter can have large and lasting effects on our communities, such as its impacts to wild-life, people, and the environment, not to mention how it makes the community look and the cost and resources it takes to pick it up."

Baltimore County Executive, John Olszewski Jr., is no stranger to environmental causes. In his first budget, he created the Baltimore County’s first sustainability officer to coordinate the county’s work to promote green energy, combat climate change, and protect the environment. He also renewed the glass recycling services. On environment, he issued the following statement:

As our county continues to grow, we must balance growth with conservation. There must be a concerted effort to advance environmental protection, continue preserving open space, and promote green energy. Our county is already over-developed along the northeast and northwest corridors — over 90 percent of the population lives on just one third of the county’s landmass. It’s time to think smarter about development and commit to a greener Baltimore County.

This is an initiative we all should be a part of to keep our residential and business communities vibrant.
